PAINTER & CERAMICIST
ABOUT KITTY
Kitty Hillier’s work is rooted in what’s above and below the surface, with a belief that all things are interdependent. Her paintings and sculptural installations comprise layers of overlapping biomorphic shapes derived from looking and noticing everyday tiny details, often made with painstaking processes of hand-construction that reflect patterns found in nature and the slow formation of structures over time. Everything is reduced to its simplest forms.
Seemingly tranquil, the colours and textures ‘work’, they are harmonious. Yet there is also a sense of tension as abstract forms hum together, calling to mind strange planetary systems, microscopic particles or huge, unknown sea creatures deep underwater. A space is created for the viewer to be immersed and transported, to pause and contemplate our relationships with the universe and each other - imagining what is unsaid or unseen and invisible forces that might be at play.
How little we know about the soil, dust, algae, lichen, gut, seabed, moon, tide, grasses and fungi. Perhaps gaining a better understanding of the minutiae is the key for creating a better future world. Hillier creates positive experiences that ignite a sense of wonder and curiosity, reminding us that we are interconnected and part of nature.
