ABOUT PHILIP

Philip is a Cornish artist, exploring still points in a turning world. His still life paintings convey a sense of calmness and have a gravitas in their considered minimal compositions. Keen to create a surface which suggests the passing of time, Philip prepares his boards with layers of gesso, before sanding them. Much like peeling back the layers of well used walls, he finds unexpected marks and colours using this method, which complement the smooth objects at the forefront.

 Using the solid lines of window frames, or tabletops, Philip’s compositions often reference the grid structures that frame our interior spaces. These ground each image and offer an internal framework to present the still life object. Philip’s works provide a tranquil homage to the sentimental everyday items that we cherish our homes.
